A few weeks ago (and I mean quite a few) I was invited by Big Dog Entertainment to the 29th Apartment Media Launch.
A not-so-new-comer to the popular Fitzroy St in St Kilda.
29th Apartment is a New York styled apartment that was inspired by lady of the night Katishe.
Katishe, an eccentric lady, walked the streets at night and would take clients back to her apartment where they would marvel at all her abstract paintings that adorned the walls. Infatuated by underground street art most of Katishe’s paintings tell stories from the streets of NYC, the city that never sleeps.
Katishe mysteriously disappeared in the 80’s and Katishe and her apartment existed only as a memory. This was until 2009 when the current owners found her self-portrait and a box of dildo’s thought to be part of her night-time employment.
And thus 29th Apartment was born to be a New York styled apartment themed bar and casual gallery – all inspired by Katishe.
29th Apartment has a funky and eclectic theme. The art that adorns the walls is underground, abstract and so dangerous for your pocket. The walls are decorated with decals and trinkets, like you would find in any home.
My personal favourites – the New York decal, the bookcase, the TV and while not a decal, the cabinet that oddly resembles my Grandma’s.
The 29th apartment Media Launch was a New York themed night, complete with boarding pass and key attached to the invitation.
The golden key was for me to try to open the special baggage that would be at the bar – if my key successfully opened the luggage, the contents would be mine. Sadly, it didn’t.
The DJ was well placed, in the far corner, on the bathtub and I spent about 5 minutes gawking at how quirky that set up was.
To the DJ on the night, my apologies for staring. My Mum has taught me better, I promise!
29th Apartment were very generous and offered us a couple of hours of complimentary wines, beers, basic spirits and even cocktails.
And it wasn’t bottom shelf drinks, but an impressive list of drinks and the shots were a lot of fun.
The bar staff despite being quite young were experienced, friendly and open to having their photos taken.
29th Apartment also provided us with nibbles, although they were few and far between with many people missing out on the food.
As far as event goes, for a New York themed night, I would have loved to see the theme taken into the food.
Perhaps some giant pizza slices, a hot-dog cart and giant bagels. That’s more NY than calamari rings!
What I love the most about 29th Apartment is that they’ve taken the theme all the way through the venue, even in the fish tank.
Clearly the fish tank was Katishe’s…
The venue is packed with awesome furniture a foosball table, pinball machine, old BBQ and ironing board that serve as tables and a bed. That’s right… a bed!
The place is packed with brilliance and the theming is quirky, clever, creative and I would die to have that New York decal on my wall at home.
My landlord would have a fit, so instead, I’ll just keep frequenting 29th Apartment and admire the great art on the wall.
29th Apartment a New York themed bar, inspired by a lady of the night complete with a foosball table, a pinball machine, a bed and good booze. The only thing that would put a cherry on top is to run into a hot dog van outside the venue…
A big thank you to Big Dog Entertainment for the invitation to the Media Launch.
Word of warning: 29th Apartment tends to cater for the younger crowd later at night. You're likely to see ladies in killer heels (Katishe eat your heart out) and the tiniest of mini dresses despite it being 2C outside. I feel I should warn you, because I'm old and I own a snuggie.
The amazing photos you see on this post have been provided by the very talented and personable Tristan Manas who I met at the 29th Media Launch.
Tristan Manas is a lover of all things, he loves the smell of new shoes, Dunedin and how people can’t pronounce it unless they have a Kiwi accent, the look on people’s faces after he shows them the photo he has just taken of them, china bar crispy pork and he loves taking photos. No mention of long walks on the beach though… sorry ladies!
I highly recommend you visit his website and see all the cool things he can do.
You’ll find more 29th Apartment photos that I shot on the Bits and Pieces facebook page.
